It is possible to perform non-contact and non-invasive defect and foreign object inspections on internal defects such as surface shapes, cracks, and voids, as well as on moving objects and high-temperature targets.
Non-contact measurement of high-temperature objects, which is difficult with conventional contact ultrasonic testing, is possible. By generating ultrasonic vibrations using pulsed lasers or piezo actuators on materials such as steel, laser-welded parts, carbon fiber, resin, biological tissues, and food, and visualizing them by receiving reflected light, it allows for non-contact, non-destructive measurement of internal defects, voids, foreign objects, and thickness. It can also measure with high sensitivity even when the object is vibrating, has a rough surface, has a complex shape, is at high temperature, or is in motion, enabling real-time monitoring and inline measurement on-site.

Multi-Channel Random Quadrature Interferometer Technology (MCRQ) This laser-based ultrasonic receiver detects the phase shift of the reflected scattered light caused by reference light and ultrasonic vibrations when laser speckle light is directed at the target object, using a multi-detector. It utilizes the random distribution of speckle phase to extract ultrasonic signals in two dimensions. The mechanism stabilizes the output signal, and unwanted environmental noise is removed by an electrical high-pass filter, allowing for a design that can be easily modified according to the environment. Additionally, by obtaining partial reference light from the fiber end, the device can be miniaturized, made robust and stable, and designed to eliminate the need for complicated adjustments.

Visualization of Ultrasonic Vibration Using Laser Interference - Example of Laser Welding Inspection When ultrasonic waves are applied to the surface of metals such as iron and stainless steel that have been laser welded, a stable wavefront is observed as surface waves propagate on the metal surface and reflect in the air when there are no defects. However, in the presence of voids or defects, the impedance difference between the metal and air causes acoustic energy to accumulate. This laser ultrasonic receiving device can visualize ultrasonic waves with a laser, allowing for easy monitoring of the internal state of materials. While conventional ultrasonic methods can be detected using microphones, they cannot reveal the effects of surface roughness, object shape, or internal structure (they are not visible), making the laser ultrasonic method more suitable for precise defect inspection of objects with rough surfaces, complex shapes, or internal structures.
