It is also referred to as a light-emitting diode. The significant difference is that LEDs have a very high energy conversion efficiency because they convert electricity directly into light. Electrical Characteristics: Like other common diodes, it has polarity and is used by applying a positive voltage to the anode (positive terminal) relative to the cathode (negative terminal). While the voltage is low, increasing the voltage does not increase the current, and it does not emit light. Once a certain voltage is exceeded, the increase in current in response to the rising voltage becomes steep, and it begins to emit light according to the amount of current. This voltage is referred to as "forward voltage drop (VF)," and compared to typical silicon diodes, light-emitting diodes have a higher forward voltage drop. Depending on the emission color, it varies: approximately 1.4V for infrared, about 2.1V for red, orange, yellow, and green, and around 3.5V for white and blue. The reverse voltage tolerance when a voltage is applied in the reverse direction is significantly lower than that of standard silicon diodes, typically around minus 5V. Exceeding this will cause destruction, making it unsuitable for rectification purposes.
