Improvement of hydrophilicity of carbon powder - Ion hydrophilization device for powder treatment
This is a device that improves the hydrophilicity of hydrophobic substances (powders) like carbon particles by applying a strong electric field with a constant voltage for a certain period of time.

By continuing this phenomenon for a certain period, a slight distortion can be induced in the molecular structure of the entire substance. This distortion makes it easier for the target powder to interact with water molecules and liquid molecules. Since the changes occur at the molecular level, hydrophilicity can be enhanced without altering the physical properties.

When the object is a conductor, the movement of electrons occurs under a strong electric field. When the object is an insulator, the electrons within the insulator show movement towards the charged body within the range allowed by the atomic nucleus. In both cases, a slight polarization in the molecular structure can be induced. The polarization of the molecules demonstrates an effect that enhances the hydrophilicity of the object. The chamber capacity for introducing the object is approximately 7 liters, and the entire chamber will be in a strong electric field environment. The amount of powder depends on the physical properties of the material, but about 2-4 kg of powder can be added, allowing for processing all at once. Since the molecules of the object change gradually, a certain amount of time is required, necessitating a 24-hour static treatment within the chamber.

We conducted a comparative analysis by measuring the untreated powder and the powder processed for 24 hours with STR-1000 using a surface tensiometer set to zero. In the penetration wetting of the powder, the liquid spreads according to the Washburn equation over a constant area. The untreated powder and the powder treated with the ion hydrophilization device under the same conditions were filled into a dedicated measurement column under appropriate identical conditions, and the penetration wetting rate was measured. There was a significant difference in the penetration rate.
