The PID method involves the use of lamps that emit known photon energies in the vacuum ultraviolet range. Gas molecules with ionization energies lower than the photon energy emitted from the lamp are ionized. Generally, PID detects and measures volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other gases at concentrations ranging from ppm to ppb levels.
