[Newsletter] Tips on Discharge Machining (Part 2)

Why does spatter adhere to the product surface? Here are the factors contributing to adhesion!

Electrical discharge machining repeatedly causes insulation breakdown in a liquid, shaping the product along the electrode. Normally, the machining debris would float in the liquid and be expelled externally, but when discharge occurs with the suspended sludge, the heat melts the sludge, which adheres to areas other than the intended machining section. This is referred to as "spatter adhesion," and it is a contributing factor to the adhesion. For components used in aerospace parts and similar applications, machining is performed without producing spatter.
