The Secrets of Half-Duplex Communication in RS-485 (Moxa)

Introduction to the Moxa white paper detailing the essentials of RS-485 half-duplex communication.

RS-485 utilizes differential transmission to cancel out most of the various noise interferences that can affect the signal, making it suitable for long-distance serial communication. <Moxa> Moxa continues to provide industrial Ethernet solutions for broadband networks from edge to core with unparalleled availability and reliability as an innovative provider in industrial automation. They offer a wide range of over 2,000 network-related products. <Moxa's Key Products> Industrial Ethernet switches, serial device servers, media converters, secure routers, IP surveillance cameras.

basic information

A simple RS-485 network consists of one master and up to 32 slave devices. Since RS-485 uses half-duplex communication, the same two wires (D+ and D-) are used for both transmitting and receiving, which means a method must be incorporated into the system to control which side can transmit. This article explains the concept of Moxa's patented ADDC (Automatic Data Direction Control) and how ADDC operates.
