The HM-540 uses a high-frequency capacitance measurement method, allowing for measurements to be taken simply by lightly pressing it against the surface of the wood without causing any damage. It takes a considerable amount of time for construction-grade softwood lumber to dry thoroughly throughout. Judging solely by the surface dryness can lead to various issues, such as warping and discrepancies in finishing dimensions. In such cases, a wood moisture meter that can measure the average moisture content within the wood is necessary. Operation is simple: just set the correction dials for wood species, specific gravity, thickness, and temperature in advance, and press it against the surface of the wood. The built-in microcontroller automatically performs correction calculations and computes the moisture value.
