Indonesian zircon sand
We propose suitable supply sources of zircon sand to diversify supply risks from specific production areas.
■What is Zircon Sand■ Zircon is a type of mineral, and the origin of the word "zircon" comes from the Persian word "zargun" (meaning gold-colored) and the Arabic word "zarquin" (meaning brown), due to the prevalence of golden-brown stones. Minerals containing zircon are often found in sand deposits formed from the weathering of rocks and their subsequent erosion by water. The minerals containing zircon primarily occur as zircon silicate combined with silica, and some can be found as transparent red crystals, which are referred to as hyacinth in the jewelry industry. The refined and extracted forms of these minerals are generally called "zircon sand." ■Key Points of the Proposal■ The global production of zircon amounts to 1,500 thousand tons, with Australia, South Africa, and China accounting for about 80% of the total. Japan is a net importer of zircon, relying on imports for 80% of its ore from South Africa and Australia.
