Technical Information: Basics and Precautions of pH Glass Electrodes

A beginner's booklet that explains the structure and handling methods of pH glass electrodes in an easy-to-understand manner.

It is very easy to understand, so it can also be used as teaching material for those who will use pH meters and potential difference measuring devices for the first time.

basic information

The pH glass electrode selectively reacts with hydrogen ions. In other words, the pH glass electrode can also be referred to as an H+ ion-selective electrode. The most important part of ion-selective measurement lies in the specially composed glass membrane. This special glass membrane needs to be immersed in the sample solution for measurement. When the glass membrane is immersed in the solution, it forms a thin (approximately 1000Å = 10^-4mm) gel-like hydration layer. When the glass electrode is immersed in water at room temperature, the expansion of the membrane is completed within 24 to 48 hours. In the case of the glass membrane of the pH electrode, the formation of this hydration layer may be accelerated at higher temperatures. Additionally, in corrosive media, organic solvents, and solutions containing F−, this layer may be damaged.
