ARINC 429 is the most commonly used data bus in commercial and transport aircraft. Here, we will explain the origins of ARINC, the characteristics of the data bus, and where ARINC 429 is used. Additionally, we will summarize the key electrical and data characteristics defined in the specifications. This explanation is not a complete description of ARINC 429. It is intended only as a concise tutorial and does not replace the complete specifications available for purchase from ARINC (for contact information, see Appendix A, "References"). ARINC 429 uses unidirectional transmission of 32-bit words over a two-wire twisted pair using a bipolar RZ format. We will describe the five fields in each word and explain the use of labels. Messages are repeated at specified intervals in a general application that transmits groups or frames of messages. Examples of commonly used word formats such as BNR, BCD, and discrete data, as well as other formats, will be provided.
