In response to the extensive collection of specifications that make up the VPX specifications, a system-level interoperable architecture has been defined in the OpenVPX specifications (VITA65.0). The VPX system is primarily used for military applications. VPX is an ideal platform for high-bandwidth applications that consume large amounts of data in harsh environments. Surveillance, radar, electronic warfare, and optical/infrared systems are typical applications of this technology. When used in mobile platforms such as aircraft and ships, most systems employ robust thermal conduction cooling enclosures. Systems for ground facilities are realized with conventional air-cooled 19-inch rack-based systems.
