Discontinuation of SMS and voice authentication for Microsoft Entra ID.

A detailed explanation of what will change, when it will change, and how the transition will be carried out!

Microsoft Entra ID will make passkeys the default authentication experience starting September 1, 2026. Users with SMS and voice enabled will have passkeys automatically enabled through the authentication method policy and will be prompted to register during MFA sign-in. On February 1, 2027, Microsoft will discontinue SMS and voice delivery (global administrators and external users will be affected on July 1, 2027), and thereafter, users who only have SMS or voice will be required to register for passkeys during sign-in. *For more details, you can view the related links.
