In 1907, Ludwig of Austria proposed the idea of determining material hardness from the depth of the indentation made by a diamond cone indenter. However, to put this into practical use, it was necessary to devise a method to eliminate the influence of the surface characteristics of the sample by applying a preliminary load. It was not until 1922 that Stanley P. Rockwell of the United States successfully developed a practical testing method by advancing Ludwig's technical concept.
