This is a tipping bucket rain gauge with a 200 mm water inlet, which has changed its body shape from the conventional cylindrical type to an hourglass-shaped cover, housing an inner container. The sensing part consists of a triangular bucket that tips over with the weight of 0.5 mm (standard) of precipitation, and a magnet attached to this tipping bucket closes a reed switch momentarily each time it tips, converting the rainfall into a pulsed contact signal for observation. There are two types available, depending on whether they are certified by the Japan Meteorological Agency.
