The SPAD-503 soil color meter is a portable colorimeter that can easily and accurately measure the color of soil. It significantly reduces the variability in soil color assessment. It features three light sensors tailored to human eye sensitivity and uses a three-stimulus value type to perform color measurement in a way that closely resembles visual observation, utilizing an 8/d (8-degree directional illumination/diffuse light reception method, with specular reflection light removal). This colorimeter was developed following the chlorophyll meter as part of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries' Soil & Plant Analyzer Development project, which is implemented by the Agricultural Industry Promotion Foundation, the Agricultural Research Center of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, the Agricultural Environmental Technology Research Institute, and various prefectural research institutions, under the guidance of their respective experts.
