When incorporating inorganic materials or fillers into plastics, issues such as aggregation and plate-out can occur, leading to poor dispersion. For example, the surfaces of flame retardants used to improve the flame resistance of plastics tend to be relatively high in polarity. On the other hand, plastics such as olefin resins have low polarity, making them difficult to mix with flame retardants. Dispersants are used to uniformly disperse these mixtures within the plastic.
