When incorporating inorganic materials or fillers into plastics, issues such as aggregation and plate-out can occur, leading to poor dispersion. For example, the surfaces of flame retardants used to improve the flame resistance of plastics typically have relatively high polarity. On the other hand, plastics such as olefin resins have low polarity and are difficult to mix with flame retardants. Dispersants are used to uniformly disperse these mixtures within the plastic.
