Technical Data "Robal Series"
A zinc coating with electrical conductivity is formed, similar to zinc plating, and zinc acts as a sacrificial anode to prevent rusting of iron.
Research on rust prevention was already being conducted in 1942 at the Cambridge Metallurgical Institute in the UK, and it was found that to achieve rust prevention equivalent to that of zinc plating, more than 95% zinc was required in the dry paint film. The Robal series is a high-concentration zinc powder coating (zinc-rich paint) designed based on this knowledge, containing as much as 96% zinc powder in the Robal and Epobal coatings. (However, Robal Silver is designed with a zinc content of 83%, and Robal Alpha with 92%.) Therefore, when the Robal series is applied, it creates a zinc coating with electrical conductivity similar to that of zinc plating, with zinc acting as a sacrificial anode to protect the iron from rust. This rust prevention method of the Robal series has the characteristic that rust does not spread from even the smallest pinholes or scratches in the coating.
