The IPS-5 is an ice profiling sonar (ice thickness gauge) that emits sound waves vertically upward and accurately measures the thickness of ice blocks moving above the sensor using reflected waves. It automatically corrects errors caused by changes in water level and sensor tilt. By installing multiple units, it is possible to observe the condition of sea ice throughout the seasons.
