"Roto oil" is a product manufactured by W. Crum in England in 1875 by sulfonating castor oil. After its application in the fiber industry was recognized, its usage rapidly increased, and it has developed into a representative product of sulfonated oils today. In terms of manufacturing, castor oil is sulfonated at a temperature around room temperature, but the reaction is very complex, and the reaction products include not only neutral salts of sulfuric esters but also active agents containing raw oil and fatty acids.
