Since the 1970s, as a measure against red water in buildings constructed after that period, the Ministry of Construction has guided the increased use of PVC-lined pipes instead of white gas pipes (zinc-coated steel pipes). Furthermore, from the 1980s to the present day in 2002, many buildings, apartments, and general residences have experienced occurrences of red water every morning. As a result, in various housing complexes, investigations were conducted by removing the water supply pipes to examine corrosion inside the pipes. The findings revealed that most of the corrosion inside the pipes was caused by the potential difference between dissimilar metals at the valves and pipe joints, as well as damage to the PVC lining seals. It was determined that the dissolved oxygen in the water reacts electrochemically with the metal through the water.
