Designing Production Systems to Truly Utilize High-Cost Manufacturing Equipment (Part 2)

The key to fully utilizing equipment is "production management" and "streamlining."

Last time, I mentioned that in order to truly utilize expensive manufacturing equipment, it is important to enhance not only the "operating rate" but also the "availability rate," and to first ensure that the equipment is in a state where it can be used "at any time." Now, if the equipment is in a movable state, can we maximize the investment effect just by that? What is next required is a system of "production management" and "flow production." We need to supply the necessary products in the necessary quantities to the equipment at the necessary timing. To achieve this, it is essential to align production plans, synchronize with preceding processes, manage work-in-progress inventory, identify bottleneck processes, prioritize tasks, and coordinate materials, tools, and personnel from a holistic factory perspective. Just because the equipment is available does not mean that anything can be produced. What is important is not the apparent operating rate of individual equipment, but to simultaneously improve the throughput, lead time, inventory, delivery dates, and quality of the entire factory. Furthermore, we should not take equipment downtime for granted; we need to record it daily, set key themes, and establish measures to prevent recurrence. Clearly defining the roles of the production floor, maintenance, production management, and quality will be key to continuous improvement and effective equipment utilization.
