Laser light is directed into a stainless steel cavity equipped with high-reflectivity mirrors at both ends. The light then bounces back and forth, traveling hundreds of kilometers in less than one millisecond. After raising the light to a predetermined threshold, the light is cut off, and the time it takes for the light intensity to disappear (ring-down) is measured. Since the time is inversely proportional to the presence of molecules in the sample, the moisture content is read from this.
