The reed relay uses a reed switch as the heart of its switching mechanism. Reed relays are very small and, unlike semiconductor relays and electromechanical relays, they possess many unique switching capabilities. For example, they can switch at 10kV, have a dielectric strength between contacts of 15kV, stable low contact resistance (below 150 milliohms), low capacitance, high insulation resistance (over 10^14 ohms), and maximum current (5A continuous, 10A pulse). They also operate in a range from 500 microseconds to 3 milliseconds and can perform over 100 million opening and closing operations.
