Vaisala HUMICAP for Moisture Activity Measurement The Vaisala converter used for measuring moisture in oil is equipped with the HUMICAP sensor, a capacitive thin-film polymer sensor developed for high-precision moisture measurement in liquid hydrocarbons. The HUMICAP sensor consists of four functional layers: a glass substrate, a lower electrode, a hygroscopic polymer layer, and a porous upper electrode. The thin-film polymer absorbs and releases water as the surrounding moisture concentration changes. Water molecules move in and out of the polymer layer until moisture equilibrium is reached between the polymer and the oil. The dielectric properties of the polymer depend on the moisture concentration. As the moisture concentration changes, the dielectric properties of the thin-film polymer change, which in turn alters the sensor's capacitance. The electronic circuit of the device measures the sensor's capacitance and converts it into moisture activity. Oil molecules and additives do not pass through the electrodes.
