basic information
■ELISA Method This is a method for detecting characteristic proteins of each item through antigen-antibody reactions. According to the Consumer Affairs Agency's notification law*, it falls under screening tests (quantitative tests). It has been reported that false positive reactions may occur depending on the type and nature of the food, and confirmation tests should be conducted as necessary. ■PCR Method This is a method for detecting characteristic DNA of each item. In tests related to items with labeling obligations, it is used as a confirmation test (qualitative test) when a positive reaction is obtained with the ELISA method. Many analytical methods based on this method can also be seen for items recommended for labeling.

Applications/Examples of results
Example 1: After producing beverage products using almonds as an ingredient, another product is being manufactured. To verify the cleaning effect, we want to test the line cleaning water to confirm that no allergens remain. Additionally, in accordance with the notification method, we would like to conduct screening tests (ELISA method) and confirmation tests (PCR method). (Soft drink manufacturing industry) ⇒ The test was conducted using the ELISA method. Since it was confirmed to be "not detected," confirmation testing was deemed unnecessary. Example 2: For products intended for export overseas, testing for food allergens related to "hazelnuts," "pistachios," and "pecans" was requested. Since it is necessary to submit the test results overseas, we would also like an English translation of the report. (Bread and confectionery manufacturing industry) ⇒ Testing was conducted using the ELISA method for the specified three items. The test results will be reported in both Japanese and English (additional fees apply).
