The leaf surface moisture sensor MC8D3901-10 is designed to detect water droplets on its sensing surface and to accurately reproduce the thermodynamic effects of leaves. The moisture level of leaves is fundamental information for determining the most appropriate sterilization and disinfection treatments to avoid mold and bacterial infections that could harm plants and crops with water droplets on their leaves in the fields of agriculture and horticulture. The sensor can detect the moisture levels on both the front and back surfaces of the leaves, which is an important feature because the drying times of the front and back surfaces of the leaves differ.

To ensure the long-term use of the sensor, the surface of the sensor is specially treated to withstand the chemical factors contained in the atmosphere and pesticides. The circuit components, housed in a sealed resin casing, enable reliable measurements even in high humidity environments. The MC8D3901-10 is shipped after calibration at the factory, so user calibration is not required. The power supply voltage ranges from DC 5 to 18V, and the output is an analog voltage of DC 0.5 to 3.0V, with cable lengths of 5m or 10m (specification required at the time of order). ■ Operating Principle Two grid-like electrodes are arranged on the sensing surface of the sensor. The sensor detects changes in the dielectric constant between the two electrodes caused by the presence of water droplets on the surface. By adopting this principle, the MC8D3901-10 can detect even tiny water droplets, unlike sensors based on resistance or conductivity principles that require measurable water droplets (minimum size) between two electrodes. The materials and colors used for the sensing surface are chosen to reliably simulate the thermal and radiative characteristics of real leaves as closely as possible.
