Silica gel desiccant is a synthetic desiccant that is created by solidifying a colloidal solution of silica, which is moderately to strongly acidic. It has fine pores of about 20 Å internally and physically adsorbs water vapor. Its moisture absorption capacity and other performance characteristics are standardized by JIS-Z-0701, and it demonstrates high effectiveness in moisture-proof packaging across a wide range of fields, from food to electronic components.

■Safety Chemically, it is a stable substance represented by SiO, with excellent safety. It is recognized as a food additive by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), and there is no risk of harm to the human body even if accidentally ingested. Additionally, it is a desiccant that physically adsorbs water vapor in the material's micropores, so there is no risk of moisture (liquefaction due to humidity) or changes in shape. The blue gel uses a highly safe organic dye. (Since June 2001, cobalt chloride has not been used.) *Regarding Cobalt Chloride Regulation Cobalt(II) chloride (CAS No. 7646-79-9) is classified as possibly carcinogenic to humans (IARC Group 2B) by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). Under the European EU directive, it is included in the list of hazardous substances (Annex I) of Directive 67/548/EEC (on the classification, packaging, and labeling of dangerous substances), and there is an obligation to display specified risk phrases if present at 0.01% or more. It is also included in the candidate list of substances for authorization under the REACH regulation (Annex XIV candidate list).
