Measurement of Display Sharpness SMS-1000 Technical Documentation Provided
To achieve a beautiful display
- Overview Sharpness is one of the indicators that represent the clarity of an image. Essentially, it deals with "blurriness," and being sharp indicates that there is little "blurriness." While resolution indicates the limit at which blurriness becomes invisible, sharpness differs significantly from resolution in how it expresses the degree of "blurriness" or how "blurriness" progresses. Resolution is a subjective evaluation, whereas sharpness is an objective evaluation. The evaluation method for the SMS-1000 uses the MTF (Modulation Transfer Function) and employs the contrast method for MTF measurement. - Trend The trend towards higher resolution and higher quality displays will remain unchanged in the future. Characteristics that satisfy both evolutions are being sought. - Effect Simple measurements will provide insights into display characteristics and serve as effective guidelines for development. *If you would like technical materials, please download the PDF from the link below.
basic information
- Measurement Details The MTF measurement of the SMS-1000 is conducted using the square wave chart method. For samples of display optical materials, both film and glass types, pseudo-pixel patterns with different resolutions (accessories) are used to measure the optical intensity profiles with and without the sample, calculate the MTF, and determine the sharpness.

The article "Evaluating and Suppressing 'Glare': Latest Trends in Display Development" by Nippon Chemical Paints/Aphrodite was published in the September 1, 2021 issue of Paint Coating Journal.
On August 24, Nippon Chemical Coatings and Aphrodite held the first seminar of the WEB seminar series titled "Trends in Cutting-Edge Display Measurement Technology and Development of Anti-Glare Coatings." This seminar, consisting of a total of three sessions, aims to explain the current state of display development and measurement methods for quality evaluation. The first session introduced methods for quantifying glare in displays. Approximately 70 participants, including material manufacturers, converters, and home appliance manufacturers, attended the event. In the first part, Shuichi Shima, president of Aphrodite, which specializes in the sale and technical support of display measurement equipment, took the stage. He discussed the principles behind "glare" in displays, evaluation methods, and the effectiveness of these evaluations. He prefaced the causes of glare by stating, "It occurs due to pixels of different brightness, resulting in visual differences," and explained the mechanism by saying, "As resolution increases, the pitch between RGB pixels has become finer, causing adjacent pixels (colors) to be picked up." In December 2019, the JIS standard for "Measuring the Degree of Glare in Displays" was established. He introduced the processes and evaluation methods for measuring glare. The second session will be held on October 20, focusing on the theme "Measurement Methods for Resolution and Sharpness (White Blurriness) of Latest Displays."

Currently conducting an online demo of the display sharpness measurement system SMS-1000!
Displays continue to evolve towards more beautiful and realistic images. Therefore, the evaluation of "image blur," which is a measure of display sharpness, will become an increasingly important parameter in the future. The SMS-1000, an industry de facto system for glare measurement, is also capable of evaluating and measuring sharpness. It is the ideal evaluation system for optical components for displays and for evaluating displays. We are also conducting online measurement demonstrations and explanations.
