Brush DC motors use mechanical commutators to reverse polarity, but they have the drawback of commutator wear, which cannot be overcome in terms of longevity. Brushless DC motors, on the other hand, operate using an electronic mechanism with a drive circuit instead of brushes and commutators. By sequentially connecting semiconductor switches to create a rotating magnetic field, they can perform a series of operations to rotate the motor, allowing for the removal of brushes and commutators that could be a disadvantage. As a result, brushless motors achieve a lifespan that is incomparable to that of mechanical commutators.
