basic information

Germanium (Ge) has a transmission wavelength range in the infrared region of 2 to 14 μm. Due to its very high refractive index of around 4.0 in the aforementioned wavelength range, transmission loss due to surface reflection (Fresnel reflection) is also significant. Therefore, anti-reflective coatings are typically required. Edmund Optics' Ge windows utilize effective anti-reflective coatings that function well in the ranges of 3 to 12 μm or 8 to 12 μm. Uncoated windows are available for use as workpieces when custom coatings are applied. It should be noted that the transmission performance of Ge decreases with increasing ambient temperature. When temperatures approach around 100°C, the transmission performance begins to deteriorate significantly, so usage below 100°C is recommended. With a Vickers hardness of 780, it is ideal for use in environments where factors such as durability and toughness are important.
