basic information
Potassium bromide (KBr) is a material commonly used in FTIR spectroscopic analysis. KBr has a slightly wider transmission spectral range than sodium chloride (NaCl), with excellent transparency in the range of 250 nm to 26 μm. The refractive index in this wavelength range varies between 1.46 and 1.59. Since KBr is water-soluble, it is necessary to protect its surface from exposure to ambient humidity. When exposed to moisture, the substrate surface can erode. KBr windows have strong resistance to mechanical shock and are easy to securely attach. They can also be used at ambient temperatures up to 300°C. The specific gravity is 2.75 g/cm³, and the Vickers hardness is 7.0.
