basic information
Sodium chloride (NaCl) is a material commonly used in FTIR spectroscopic analysis. NaCl is a relatively inexpensive cubic crystal that has excellent transparency in the range of 250 nm to 16 μm. The refractive index in this wavelength range varies between 1.4 and 1.6. Due to its inherently hygroscopic nature, care must be taken to ensure that sample materials do not contain moisture. NaCl windows are sensitive to thermal shock but can be used at ambient temperatures up to 400°C. It has a specific gravity of 2.17 g/cm³ and a Vickers hardness of 18.2.
