The lotion prism is made by joining two right-angle prisms with birefringence using optical contact. The ordinary ray and the extraordinary ray do not separate until they enter the second prism. The ordinary ray does not change its refractive index when entering the second prism, so the light travels straight without refraction. In contrast, the extraordinary ray refracts at the boundary between the two prisms due to the change in refractive index.
