basic information

Unlike standard wave plates, achromatic wave plates (phase plates) achieve a constant phase shift regardless of the wavelength of the light used. This achromatic (i.e., polychromatic) characteristic is realized by combining two types of crystal materials (quartz and magnesium fluoride) with different retardation properties. Even when the wavelength of the incident light changes, the amount of phase shift generated by each crystal cancels each other out, resulting in a lack of wavelength dependence. The flat characteristics of achromatic wave plates (phase plates) make them ideal for use with tunable lasers, multi-wavelength laser systems, and other broadband wavelength light sources.
