An extender lens with a negative focal length functions by being mounted between the camera lens and the camera, effectively increasing the overall focal length of the optical system. This allows for an increase in optical magnification (while reducing the actual field of view) without changing the original working distance of the camera lens. Edmund Optics offers extender lenses that extend the focal length to 1.5X and 2X. For example, when the focal length is extended by 1.5X, the optical magnification increases by the same factor (while the actual field of view decreases by the same factor in the opposite direction).
