Crystals are used in laser systems as laser medium crystals and frequency conversion crystals (nonlinear crystals). The laser medium crystal, also known as the gain medium, is placed within the laser cavity and determines laser parameters such as wavelength and beam coherence. Nonlinear crystals are used for nonlinear frequency conversion of strong light, achieving wavelength combinations of the input light's frequency. Optical isolators are used to enhance the performance of laser systems. Optical isolators prevent the intrusion of reflected light back into the laser, enabling one-way transmission of laser light. They protect the laser system from back reflections and improve the stability of the laser system's power.
