Hot melt extrusion (HME) is a method that involves melting polymers by applying heat and pressure, and extruding them into molds in a continuous process. HME is widely used in the plastics industry and has recently been applied to pharmaceutical formulations and drug delivery systems. The HME process is used to mix active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) with polymers and other excipients at high temperatures and pressures.
