Unlike red rust, black rust does not dissolve in water and has a volume that is one-tenth of that of red rust. Therefore, it can also solve the blockages caused by red rust. In 2014, as a measure to prevent the deterioration of piping, the NMR Pipe Protector was introduced in some systems at Kumamoto Red Cross Hospital, and due to the recognized anti-corrosion effects, it was implemented throughout the entire facility in 2016. In a water quality survey conducted before the introduction of the NMR Pipe Protector, the iron content in the hospital's air conditioning hot water was high at 12.3 mg per liter due to red rust dissolving in the water. However, after converting the surface of the red rust to black rust, it was reduced to just 0.07 mg in only two weeks, achieving a concentration reduction of approximately 82%. Kumamoto Red Cross Hospital's section chief, Ogawa, also stated in the Air Conditioning Times of 2018, "We noticed the clarity within a few weeks after the introduction," clearly demonstrating the effectiveness of the NMR Pipe Protector. By deciding to implement the NMR Pipe Protector, Kumamoto Red Cross Hospital has not only been able to protect the medical environment from leaks caused by red rust but has also been able to allocate more budget to other areas.

◆Results of Introducing NMR Pipe Protectors In January 2007, NMR Pipe Protectors were installed at Buckingham Palace. At that time, Buckingham Palace was using galvanized steel pipes for the air conditioning hot water and hot water supply systems, and the circulating hot water for Queen Elizabeth's room had turned reddish-brown due to rust. The purpose of introducing the NMR Pipe Protectors was to make this water clear and to extend the life of the pipes. Before installation, the iron content in the air conditioning hot water pipes was very high at 16.6 mg/l, and there was a large amount of red rust present in the pipes. After the installation of the NMR Pipe Protectors, a water quality test conducted 24 days later showed that the iron content had decreased to 0.46 mg/l, clearing the standard value of 1.0 mg/l, and the water color had also changed to clear. In the hot water supply pipes, the iron content was 2.8 mg/l before installation, but 24 days after the installation of the NMR Pipe Protectors, it dropped to 0.018 mg/l, significantly clearing the water quality standard of 0.2 mg/l, and the water color also became clear, demonstrating the high rust prevention effectiveness of the NMR Pipe Protectors. Currently, Buckingham Palace is undergoing pipe renovation work, but due to security reasons, construction personnel are generally prohibited from entering the area around Her Majesty's room, making renovations impossible. However, the NMR Pipe Protectors have resolved this issue.

The British Museum introduced the NMR Pipe Protector, a device to prevent red rust deterioration in pipes, to protect cultural properties from water leaks caused by red rust deterioration in the piping system in March 2016. ◆ NMR Pipe Protector for Preventing Red Rust in Pipes Before installation at the British Museum, the iron content in the water was 20.0 mg/l, raising concerns about leaks due to red rust deterioration in the pipes. However, five weeks after installation, this value decreased to 0.2 mg/l, a reduction of 1/100, completely halting the progression of red rust. The rust prevention effect of the NMR Pipe Protector was evaluated, leading to an additional installation in a separate piping system at the British Museum in March 2018. ◆ Rust Prevention Effect of the NMR Pipe Protector Water supply and air conditioning pipes can experience red rust deterioration, leading to blockages, red water, and leaks. When the NMR Pipe Protector is attached to the piping, it transforms red rust into black rust through the action of electromagnetic waves. Black rust forms a hard crystal that does not dissolve in water, creating a coating inside the pipes that prevents the occurrence of red rust and leaks. Since the volume of black rust is 1/10 that of red rust, the blockage caused by red rust in the pipes is reduced. As a result, the NMR Pipe Protector has eliminated the risk of leaks at the British Museum and has played a role in protecting cultural properties. The "Teigeki Building" in Marunouchi, Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo (54 years old as of 2020) had galvanized steel pipes used for air conditioning chilled and hot water piping that experienced some leakage due to red rust 20 years ago in Heisei 12, when the building was 34 years old. To prevent red rust deterioration, NMR pipe protectors were installed. Since then, there have been no new leaks, and as of 2020, despite being 54 years old, there are no issues with red rust, and the air conditioning chilled and hot water piping no longer needs to be updated. Currently, there are still no problems with red rust deterioration, and the system is in use. The results of the introduction of the NMR pipe protector in the Teigeki Building were featured in an article in the air conditioning and refrigeration industry magazine "Kuchou Times" in the January 1, 2019 issue.

~Solving the problem of old building water piping around the world suffering from red rust deterioration~ The red rust prevention device for piping, "NMR Pipe Protector," has obtained and registered patents in Japan, the United States, South Korea, and Hong Kong. Until recently, the Japanese patent system only respected the first-to-file principle, meaning that if someone documented their idea or technology and filed a patent application first, they could obtain the patent. Recently, however, the content of patents has been more rigorously examined to determine whether it is "feasible" and whether the patent content is truly "correct," assessing whether a product can actually be developed from the patent or if it genuinely functions. Only those that pass this scrutiny are registered as patents. In particular, U.S. patents undergo strict examination, and if the patent content is not recognized as an actual product or device, it will not be granted. For example, during the examination of U.S. patents, it is questioned and assessed whether the patented technology is truly "commercially viable." The red rust prevention device for piping, "NMR Pipe Protector," has successfully passed such stringent patent examinations abroad and has been granted and registered patents in major countries around the world.

On November 23, 2006, three NMR pipe protectors were installed in all iron circulation hot water and air conditioning piping systems at the Royal Garden Hotel. Before the installation of the NMR pipe protectors, the iron content in the hot water was very high at 2.79 mg/l, indicating significant red rust deterioration. After 25 days of installing the NMR pipe protectors, the iron content in the hot water dropped to 0.016 mg/l, a reduction of nearly 95% compared to before installation, and well below the drinking water standard of 0.2 mg/l, demonstrating the rust prevention effect of the NMR pipe protectors. This indicates that the NMR pipe protectors successfully prevented the occurrence of new red rust and transformed it into black rust. Additionally, leaks that had occasionally occurred prior to the installation of the NMR pipe protectors have not happened at all in the past 14 years since their installation. Thus, by introducing the NMR pipe protectors, the piping at the Royal Garden Hotel has become usable for as long as the building continues to be in use. The hotel management is very satisfied with the results of the NMR pipe protector installation, and the Royal Garden Hotel is considering the additional installation of NMR pipe protectors for the air conditioning chilled water piping in the future.

The first hospital to verify the "NMR Pipe Protector" - NMRPT - was the "Former Medical Center of the Japanese Red Cross Society." In 1999, the water supply pipes of the former medical center, which had been built 24 years earlier, were made of galvanized steel. Red rust had developed inside the water supply pipes, and the water from the tap in the newborn room showed an iron ion concentration of 2.0 mg/l in the morning, significantly exceeding the water quality standard of 0.3 mg/l. As a result, large amounts of water were run before use. To prevent future leaks, one NMR Pipe Protector was installed on the secondary side piping of the elevated water tank. Water was sampled from the tap in the newborn room, located about 150 meters from the elevated water tank, to verify the effectiveness of rust prevention. Measurements of the iron ion concentration in the water at the Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Public Health showed that before the installation of the NMR Pipe Protector, the level was 2.0 mg/l, but it dropped to 0.48 mg/l two weeks after installation and to 0.27 mg/l six weeks after installation, proving that the NMR Pipe Protector prevented new red rust in the water supply pipes and reduced existing red rust to non-soluble black rust. Because these verification results were beneficial for other Red Cross hospitals, they were introduced in the January 2000 issue of the internal newsletter of the Japanese Red Cross Medical Center to hospitals nationwide.
