The famous bookstore in Shinjuku, as of 2005, had been in operation for 41 years and required measures to address aging plumbing. However, it was discovered that asbestos had been used in the ceiling of the building, making plumbing renovation work difficult. The reason for this was that due to the risk of asbestos dispersion, restrictions on its use in surrounding buildings were necessary. In addition to the 3 to 6 months or more of facility closure required for plumbing renovation, a separate closure period for asbestos removal work was also needed. The cost of asbestos treatment was 2 to 3 times that of plumbing renovation. This issue can be completely resolved with the NMR Pipe Protector. The installation of the NMR Pipe Protector does not require asbestos removal, there is no water outage, and the work is completed in 1 to 2 hours. The introduction cost is 5 to 10% of the plumbing renovation cost, and since there is no need for asbestos removal expenses, significant cost savings are possible. Therefore, the major equipment company that became the general contractor for the plumbing deterioration measures for this project considered the NMR Pipe Protector to be the optimal solution and decided to implement it. The NMR Pipe Protector was installed in 2005, and as of 2020, the building is now 56 years old. The air conditioning chilled and hot water pipes that have been in use since the completion of the building have significantly exceeded their expected lifespan, yet they are being used without any progression of red rust corrosion.
