In response to the outbreak of enterohemorrhagic E. coli food poisoning that occurred in an eating and drinking chain store in April 2011, the standards for raw meat intended for consumption were set in September 2011 to require that "Enterobacteriaceae be negative." Since the Enterobacteriaceae testing includes lactose non-fermenting enteric bacteria that may be overlooked in E. coli testing, it allows for the monitoring of microbial contamination in meat and other food products as required for hygiene.
