Vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) are enterococci that have acquired vancomycin resistance genes. This VRE is usually harmless and asymptomatic even when carried by healthy individuals, but it can pose a risk of causing peritonitis or pneumonia in postoperative patients or those with weakened immune defenses.
