マテリアルズ・インフォマティクス(MI)とは?
皆さんが普段使っているスマホやパソコン、車や家電、化粧品や衣料品など、これらを支えているのは「材料」です。 ただ新しい材料を生み出すのはとても大変で、原料の種類は何百、何千とあり、組み合わせや工程条件を少し変えるだけで、結果が変わってしまいます。 近年は「もっと早く開発して」「コストを下げて」「環境にやさしくして」という社会からの要望がどんどん増えています。 その一方で研究現場では人材不足という大きな課題もあります。人材確保が難しくなる中、限られたリソースで成果を出さなければなりません。 だからこそ、研究者さんたちがこれまでに積み重ねてきた実験データをAIに学習させて、条件と結果のパターンをAI(機械学習)モデル化するのです。 そのため、数十回の実験で目標を達成できたり、実験回数を大幅に減らすことができます。 つまり、MIは研究者個人の勘や経験だけに頼るのではなく、データを根拠にゴールまでの最短距離を示してくれるカーナビのようなイメージです。
