Researchers of lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) spend a tremendous amount of time on screening, optimization, and scaling up experiments to achieve optimal performance, spot-on targeting, and controlled release of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). Factors such as solubility, pH stability, payload release, and encapsulation all depend on particle size, shape, and structure. In other words, to obtain the right formulation, it is necessary to explore a vast number of formulation parameters and process parameters one by one, and even if a perfect formulation is found, scaling up usually means switching equipment and re-optimizing settings.
