信号変換器とは、工場などで使われる温度や圧力などのセンサから出てくるさまざまな電気信号を、そのままでは扱いにくいため、PLCなどの制御装置が理解しやすい共通の信号（たとえばDC4〜20mAなど）に整えるための機器です。
