To absorb small vertical movements of the piping system, support products using springs (spring hangers and supports) are employed. These are based on helical coil springs, and according to the characteristics of the springs, the support load varies in proportion to the amount of movement. This load variation is limited according to the sensitivity of the piping during stress analysis calculations. The spring hangers and supports are set so that the weight of the piping at cold conditions matches the force of the springs. The load and position during operation are calculated based on the design movement (travel) of the piping and the spring constant. The difference in load between operation and cold conditions acts as a reaction force on the piping system and is limited by relevant design specifications.
