Y. enterocolitica is one of the most commonly observed diarrheal foodborne pathogens within the Yersinia genus. In several countries, this bacterium has surpassed Shigella as a major cause of acute bacterial gastroenteritis, becoming comparable to Salmonella and Campylobacter. Its ability to grow under refrigeration conditions raises significant concerns regarding food safety. In cases that occurred in collective school lunches, the number of patients has exceeded 100, with instances of large outbreaks sometimes exceeding 500 or even 1,000 cases.
