BYK-C 8001 Epoxy Resin-Based Coupling Agent
The world's first certified additive for wind power generation plants, BYK-C 8001, is a polymer-type coupling agent that improves the mechanical strength of epoxy resin.
BYK-C 8001 was specifically developed for glass fiber reinforced epoxy resin applications. This additive improves mechanical properties by bonding the fibers and the matrix. The degree of improvement depends on the combination of glass fibers and epoxy resin. As the world's first specialty chemical manufacturer, BYK currently offers additives certified by Germanischer Lloyd: BYK-C 8001. Wind turbine manufacturers can use polymer-type coupling agents without further testing in glass fiber reinforced epoxy resin—an important factor for resource efficiency in the globally thriving wind power market.

Applications/Examples of results
The mechanical strength of the materials, and consequently the robustness of the rotor blades, is significantly enhanced, allowing for the production of longer rotor blades at practically the same weight. The wind power market, like the aviation market, only uses certified resources and raw materials, so the actual amount of additives used is minimal. Nevertheless, BYK has applied for certification of BYK-C 8001 as the world's first additive. This certification is granted by the globally recognized Germanischer Lloyd (DNV GL). Improving mechanical strength by up to 60%, resulting in a longer lifespan. BYK-C8001 enhances the mechanical strength of rotor blades for wind power plants through reinforced glass fiber matrix bonding. This additive, in addition to offering design flexibility and a wide range of applicability, is easy to add and handle due to its liquid form, for example, when using amine hardeners.
