BYK additives to maximize the potential of advanced composite materials.

By using BYK additives, the inherent performance of composite materials can be realized.

★World's First Coupling Agent for Carbon Fiber BIC Chemical has developed the world's first coupling agent for carbon fiber that improves the mechanical strength of CFRP using a radical curing resin. BYK-C 8013 / C 8014 has double bonds and reactivity with vinyl ester resin, and it enhances the adhesion between the resin and fibers by forming chemical bonds on the surface of the carbon fibers. As a result, the mechanical strength is significantly improved.

basic information

Coupling Agent for Thermosetting Resins BYK-C Series Blades for wind power generation are becoming larger to generate electricity more efficiently. As they increase in size, factors such as strength, reliability, and durability become extremely important. To meet the demands of this market, BYK-C 8001 has been developed. BYK-C 8001 is a coupling agent that works between epoxy resins and glass fibers and has certification from Germanischer Lloyd. This means that manufacturers of wind power turbines can use BYK-C 8001 without conducting additional tests. By adding this coupling agent to the resin, mechanical strength can be improved by up to 60%. Additionally, dynamic properties under repeated loading are also enhanced, significantly improving long-term reliability.

Applications/Examples of results

Process additive for improving the impregnation of reinforced fibers Even when using high-strength carbon fibers for reinforced fibers, if poor impregnation occurs, the original performance cannot be fully realized. In particular, the surface of carbon fibers does not bond well with resins, and defects during molding often become a problem. To solve such issues, the process additive BYK-P 9920 was developed to improve the wettability of reinforced fibers. By adding BYK-P 9920 to the resin, it is possible to reduce the entrapment of bubbles and voids, thereby achieving a decrease in defect rates during molding and a reduction in repair processes. The addition of this additive does not affect the strength properties of the final product. Applicable resins: Epoxy resins, Vinyl ester resins Applicable fibers: Carbon fibers, Glass fibers Impact on water absorption rate: None (meets Lloyd standards) Impact on mechanical properties: None
