Gas pump for SF6 sulfur hexafluoride

SF6 gas ensuring the safety of circuit breakers and switchgear Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) is one of the most widely used insulating gases. Its excellent electrical and thermal properties make it an ideal choice for use in gas-insulated switchgear, breakers, and gas-insulated lines seen in the transmission and distribution (T&D) industry. When an arc occurs, the six fluorine molecules of SF6 separate from sulfur and capture electrons, effectively extinguishing the arc. The gas then self-recovers by returning the molecules to their original configuration. Sulfur hexafluoride is non-toxic, colorless, odorless, non-flammable, and chemically inert, and it is widely used as a robust insulator and the aforementioned arc extinguishing agent in medium to high voltage transmission and distribution applications; however, it is not without environmental impact. SF6 has a heat-trapping effect that is about 25,200 times greater than that of carbon dioxide (CO2). For this reason, SF6 is one of the greenhouse gases with an extremely high global warming potential (GWP). Therefore, it is crucial to continuously monitor for SF6 leaks in electrical systems.
